Did you elect a new health insurance plan for 2015? Start the New Year out right, and make sure you have all the information you need to prepare for a healthy 2015.
Ask yourself these questions about your new plan to make sure you're ready for any situations where you'll need to use your health insurance:
Did I receive new insurance cards for my plan?
Most insurance companies send out new cards in December for the upcoming year. Make sure yours weren't lost in the holiday card shuffle. Every adult on the plan should keep their card on them at all times. Notify your healthcare provider as soon as possible as to the change in coverage. This protects you if they are behind in billing and paperwork by helping you avoid additional out-of-pocket expenses resulting from billing the wrong insurance company.
Do I know what my plan covers?
Look for specific details about coverage for doctor visits, hospital care, prescription drugs, and dental and eye care. Doctors take many different plans, and some prefer not to manage the terms and conditions of each and leave it up to the patient to understand the specifics. As such, you should know your co-payment requirement for tests, office visits, lab work and the like. You will be responsible for making these co-payments at the time of your visit, as many doctors no longer bill for co-payments.
Can I keep my doctor, hospital and pharmacy?
Be aware that with some plans, your choices are limited. Do not assume that a provider is in-network. Insurance plans can vary and can have minor coverage distinctions between plans. It may seem like one doctor takes your insurance, but it may not be your particular plan. Confirm that the doctor is in-network prior to visiting to avoid any unforeseen bills.
What's the most I will pay out of pocket?
Premiums are only one consideration. It's important to consider other factors such as deductibles and co-payments as well. It is generally the patient's responsibility to know what is expected of him or her at the time of payment.
